CJC101 Sean-nos Singing with Beth Benedetto (8:16)

October 31st, 2007

Failte isteach! Welcome everyone to Celtic Juice, a new video podcast series from CookStudios.TV. Here you’ll find regular features from across the Celtic world, including Irish & Scottish music and language, Welsh & Cornish folktales and sporting clubs, crafts and poetry from Brittany & the Isle of Man, modern life and travel to far-flung Galicia on the coast of Spain – and everything in between. Grab a seat beside your favorite musicians, take a backdoor peek into ancient sites, cook foods you’re afraid to say out loud, and learn what makes the Celtic nations intensely different, and uncommonly familiar.

On our very first program this Samhain evening, this Halloween night, let’s pick up the past with both hands. Welcome into the world of old-style homespun Irish song – it’s Sean-nos Singing with Beth Benedetto, from the rolling hills beyond the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, USA. Learn how this traditional singing style is far from plain, as Beth invites us to her home for an ornamented earful of lyrical Gaelic. We’ll also meet master bodhran drummer Jesse Winch, who joins Beth to stretch the boundaries of the sean-nos tradition. (And we’ll hear much more from Jesse soon!)

Then to further slake your thirst for Sean-nos, explore Irish Gaelic language around the world at www.Daltai.com, and discover the broad reach of Irish traditional arts at www.Comhaltas.ie. Beth also recommends Clo Iar-Chonnachta at www.CIC.ie for many collected recordings and other great info. Thanks very much to the O’Neill-Malcom Branch of the Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann for making us welcome at their wonderful annual Irish festival in Fairfax, Virginia, www.CCEpotomac.org.

Perk up an ear and lean a bit closer, for rich moments with the people who keep the home fires burning – and then we’d love to hear from you on the blog at CelticJuice.TV. We hope you enjoy the new show. Ta failte romhat!
